I want to introduce our 2018  Albariño. This wine is not to miss!  It has a medium straw gold color, with distinctive aromas of lemon, apple and banana.  You may also discover some hints of rose petal in the nose.  It has an elegant texture with almost briny minerality, with fresh flavors on the palate comprising of Asian pear, green apple, and citrus.  The minerality and freshness driven by the vineyard's proximity to the ocean carries you long into the finish.  This refreshing, medium bodied wine makes it a great candidate for seafood or shellfish.

 

About the grape - Albariño is a white wine grape grown in the Northwest part of Spain called Galicia.  This grape is used to make white varietal wines.   Albariño is the Indo-European word for the grape.  In Portugal it is called Alvarinho or Cainho Branco.  This grape was often blended with Godello, Caiño, Loureiro, Arinto, or Treixadura up until 1985. Albariño began to be commonly made into a varietal wine in 1986 after the Rias Baixas DO was established. The AVAs in California that grow Albariño are as follows: Santa Ynez Valley, Clarksburg, Napa, Edna Valley and Los Carneros.

 

About the Vineyard's from which we harvest our Albariño:

 

Jespersen Ranch – This vineyard is located 30 miles south of Paso Robles in the Edna Valley AVA.  The first plantings of the vines were in 2006 and 2007.  Andy Blodgett was the owner of the vineyard at this time, and he planted 46 acres.  An additional 31 acres were planted in 2012.  This vineyard is part of the Niner Wine Estates.  The location is 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. This vineyard is heavily laid with fog a majority of the time.

 

Morro View Vineyards – This vineyard is also in the Edna Valley AVA, so the climate is similar to the Jespersend Ranch.  This vineyard has the perfect slopes for the irrigation of the vines, with fog for cooler climate grapes making it perfect for Albariño.
